State secretary Kåre Fostervold officially opened Eldfisk II on March 23. The opening took place on the new platform Eldfisk 2/7 S.

In his speech the secretary from the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy talked about the great importance that the Greater Ekofisk Area has had for Norway’s oil industry for over 40 years and will have in the future. The Eldfisk field is the second largest in the area and has been in continuous production since 1979. With Eldfisk II the foundation has been laid for continued operation for years to come.

The Eldfisk II project was approved by the Norwegian Parliament in 2011. Construction of the new integrated platform Eldfisk 2/7 S begun in 2012. The jacket was installed in 2013, and the topsides were installed on the field in 2014. The platform contains wellhead and processing facilities and an accommodation module with 154 cabins. There will be a total of 40 new wells. The platform is bridge-connected to the other platforms on the Eldfisk Complex. Production is piped to the Ekofisk Complex 10 miles away.

In addition to the new platform the large development project includes substantial modifications to existing facilities on the field and new infrastructure on the seabed.

Major investments
The total investments for the Eldfisk II project was estimated at 35-40 billion NOK (2011 NOK) in the plan for development and operation. This includes the extensive drilling program. Norwegian share of the development is between 60 and 70 percent. Kværner has been the main contractor for engineering and construction of the platform’s topsides and bridges to Eldfisk 2/7 S, while Aker Solutions MMO and Rosenberg WorleyParsons has had major contracts for modification of existing plants. The new local equipment room module was constructed at Aker Solutions in Egersund.

This was the third opening of a new platform in the Greater Ekofisk Area in 17 months. Minister of Petroleum and Energy Tord Lien opened the wellhead platform  Ekofisk 2/4 Z on the Ekofisk Complex 29 October 2013, while Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Robert Eriksson opened the accommodation and field center platform Ekofisk 2/4 L 1 April last year.
