Congratulations!

‘We are celebrating the Sami national day to show respect and recognition for the Sami people and culture. It’s important that we contribute to raise awareness about the indigenous people in Norway, who historically and until modern time have been exposed to a systematic lack of recognition for their ethnicity, culture, language and identity,’ said Ingunn Hovdevik Hagelin, Manager of HR, Communications, Medical and REFS at ConocoPhillips in Norway.

The Sami national day is an official flag day in Norway, marking the first Sami national meeting in Trondheim in 1917. It was the first time in history that Sami people from the whole Sapmi area met to collaborate on joint Sami interests across the borders. Sapmi is a collective term for traditional settlement areas in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

The Sami national day was sanctioned by the Sami Conference in Helsinki in 1992 and is joined by all Sami people in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. It was celebrated the first time in 1993 meanwhile United Nations International Indigenous Year was officially inaugurated in Karasjok. Ten years later, the Sami official flag day on 6 February was established in Norway.

Congratulations!
